Before re-design

The garden is north facing, wide and shallow. It came with the usual broken concrete which I
seem to inherit wherever I go. There were some good mature shrubs and an old apple tree, but no colour in the garden
once you got passed June. One end was dominated by the garage wall and less than attractive garden room.

During re-design

The design is a series of overlapping circles which decrease in size, creating gradually more
intimate spaces. I positioned the patio away from the cottage to catch the maximum amount of sun and allow views back. The
shape of the lawn is maintained by a mowing strip all round, and the deep beds provide ample planting opportunities.

After re-design

I used Indian Sandstone for the patio, and a sturdy pergola rail to disguise the garden
room and garage and provide areas for climbing plants.

Planting

By the next summer the planting was already beginning to mature.

Lighting

Atmospheric lighting extends the use of the garden into the evening.
